Mastering Maya: Letter Modeling for Maya

October 29, 2014  /  Carly Zelenetz

This project definitely taught me a lot about Maya and about the 3-d modeling process. I got a lot of helpful feedback from this project. First off, i got feedback about my font that indicated me that it looked unfinished. One person even said that they “didn’t get the spots under the capital W,” which truthfully was part of the intended design to make it look a little abstract. On another note, the illustrated letter got a lot of good feedback. I  did spend a lot of time on it, so i would hope so. I also got feedback telling me that my W lightning bolt was a little confusing, and that the tornado looked like tires. One person said that the grass was a little distracting which i could definitely see, or maybe i should have even just lowered the grass so that the blades did not cut into my image so much.

In terms of learning from this project, i definitely did. After feeling helpless and hopeless while staring at numerous button options, i decided that instead of putting the project off, i would try to play around in Maya a little bit and see if i could learn how to use some buttons. After sitting in my room for the entire day, i finally learned how to get the project done. i perfected my extruding techniques and added texture to my items. From the feedback, i learned that it is really important to spend more time on my letter typeface and that i could have used more detail and put more time into it. I also learned that it may have been better to leave out the grass, and make the subject of the illustrated letter something more specific like “wind”
